Per SpookyDan / Urban Atrophy: “In the mid-1960s the Naval Research Laboratory built an experimental satellite-communications facility at a former Nike missile control site near (W-45) … used during the Vietnam War as part of a special operation called “Compass Link”, established by the Defense Communications Agency to pass high-quality target photography…”

Per the Ed Thelen site, Nike W-45: Accokeek, Maryland C-4 West Waldorf, South side MD 228 (Naval Research Lab Field Site, Lower Waldorf) // L-4 West Waldorf, North side MD 228 (Naval Research Lab Waldorf Annex)

The Nike Missile Base W-44, located near Waldorf, Maryland, was part of the United States’ Cold War air defense strategy. Established in 1955, it served as a surface-to-air missile site designed to protect the Washington, D.C. area from potential Soviet bomber attacks. The base remained operational until June 1971.

The site comprised two main areas:

  • Launch Area: Situated on the boundary between Prince George’s and Charles counties, this area housed missile silos, a missile assembly and test building, barracks, and other support structures. After decommissioning, the Launch Area was acquired by Charles County and is currently leased to the Maryland Indian Heritage Society for use as a cultural center. nab.usace.army.mil
  • Control Area: Located approximately one mile west of the Launch Area along Country Lane, this section contained radar towers, control buildings, and other facilities essential for missile guidance and tracking. The Control Area is currently unused, though Charles County maintains the site grounds. nab.usace.army.mil

Environmental investigations have identified contaminants such as carbon tetrachloride and trichloroethylene in the groundwater at the Launch Area. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is preparing a cleanup plan that includes on-site chemical reduction and bioremediation, along with land use controls and long-term monitoring, to address these environmental concerns.

Today, remnants of the base, including missile silos and support buildings, can still be seen, though many structures have deteriorated over time. The site’s history serves as a reminder of the nation’s Cold War defenses and the ongoing efforts to manage and repurpose former military installations.
