Field of Ghosts at Point Lookout Lighthouse
In Scotland, Maryland, Route 5 Southern Maryland.
Said to be among the most haunted places in the DC metro area, this was the site of one of the largest Confederate prison camps during the Civil War (52k+ inmates).
Point Lookout State Park, located at the junction of the Potomac River & the Chesapeake Bay, has had sightings reported so frequently that the park rangers are said to keep a log.
Point Lookout Lighthouse, located at the southern tip of Maryland’s western shore where the Potomac River meets the Chesapeake Bay, has a storied history dating back to its construction in 1830. During the Civil War, the area was transformed into a significant military site, housing both Hammond General Hospital and Camp Hoffman, a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp that held up to 20,000 soldiers. The harsh conditions led to the deaths of over 3,000 prisoners, contributing to the site’s reputation for paranormal activity.
Over the years, numerous reports of unexplained phenomena have emerged from Point Lookout State Park, particularly centered around the lighthouse. Visitors and staff have recounted experiences such as disembodied voices, apparitions, and other mysterious occurrences, leading many to consider it one of the most haunted locations in the region.
Today, the lighthouse stands as a testament to its rich and tumultuous past. While it is currently closed to the public due to ongoing restoration efforts, the surrounding state park remains open for visitors interested in exploring its natural beauty and historical significance.
