Poe’s longest and greatest work, EUREKA, conflicted: If the universe were infinite and uniformly filled with stars, every line of sight would view infinite stars, making night sky bright as day. Perhaps unknowingly, Poe wittily pitted observable reality against earth- and human-diminuitive infinitude insisted in Jesuit cosmological theory.
