It is said the ghost of Mary Surratt, one of the co-conspirators in Lincoln’s assassination, still haunts her former home, as well as other spirits from that time period. She claimed innocence until her execution. Voices, cries and footsteps have also been heard.
The Surratt House and Tavern, located at 9110 Brandywine Road in Clinton, Maryland, is a historic site with significant ties to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Built in 1852, the structure served multiple roles, including a family residence, tavern, hostelry, post office, and polling place. During the Civil War, it functioned as a safe house for Confederate agents.
Mary Surratt, the owner, was implicated in the conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln and became the first woman executed by the U.S. government. Visitors to the Surratt House Museum have reported paranormal activities, such as unexplained voices, cries, and footsteps, leading to beliefs that Mary Surratt’s spirit and those from her era may still linger in the house.
Today, the Surratt House Museum offers insights into mid-19th century life and the events surrounding the Lincoln assassination. The museum features period-appropriate furnishings, with some pieces original to the Surratt family.
The Surratt Society, founded in 1975, supports the museum and encourages research into its historical significance.
