Multi-Modal Astrological Techniques of the Masters

A lifelong astrologer describes four core astrology systems that she uses in tandem: Vedic, Hellenistic, Western (modern tropical), and British Horary.1

Vedic astrology (Jyotish)

In her description, this is an ancient Indian system associated with sages Parashara and Jaimini, using concepts like nakshatras (lunar mansions), yogas, planet “karakas,” and many harmonic/divisional charts (she specifically mentions the Navamsha as a marriage-focused harmonic chart).2 She frames Vedic as especially strong for character and for judging the soundness of a marriage or business partner.2

Hellenistic astrology

She presents Hellenistic astrology as the astrology of classical Greece (possibly influenced by Egypt), using the tropical zodiac, and emphasizes its distinct “ways of judging” and its many predictive techniques/charts.3 She specifically cites reliance on the manuscripts of Vettius Valens as a primary source for her work in this tradition.3

Western astrology (modern tropical)

She describes Western astrology as tropical-zodiac based and, in her approach, most useful for temperament of the body and prediction—while being comparatively weaker for deep character delineation than Vedic/Hellenistic.4 She explicitly frames it as one component inside her larger four-system model.4

British Horary astrology

This is the question-driven system: a chart is cast for the time and location of the question (and she notes it may sometimes be cast for the astrologer’s location at the moment the question is received).5 She ties her horary approach to the 17th-century astrologer William Lilly and his judging rules, and contrasts it with Indian Prashna approaches and “Tajika aspects.”5 She also notes horary is used at her discretion.1

How she combines them

Her stated intent is “right tool for the right job” by reading multiple charts across systems in a single consult.2 For example, her “cold readings” are described as combining Vedic, Hellenistic, Western, and sometimes Horary charts from birth data alone.6 She also notes she’s “working on learning a couple of new ones” beyond the four she lists, without naming them.1

How she integrates them in her consultations, and compare her approach to conventional usage by other astrologers.

A Deep Dive into Maralyn Burstein’s Four Core Astrology Systems

Maralyn Burstein is a professional astrologer known for integrating four distinct astrological traditions in her practice. According to her, each system offers unique insights, so she employs a “right tool for the right job” approach by using multiple astrology systems in tandem during client consultations maralynbursteinastrology.com. The four core systems she uses are: Vedic Astrology (Jyotish), Hellenistic Astrology, Western (Modern Tropical) Astrology, and British Horary Astrology maralynbursteinastrology.com. Below, we explore each of these traditions individually—covering their origins, key concepts, and strengths—and then examine how Burstein combines them in practice. (Notably, Burstein has mastered these four and is even studying additional astrological systems beyond them maralynbursteinastrology.com.)

Vedic Astrology (Jyotish)

Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, is the ancient astrological tradition of India, said to be around 4,000 years old maralynbursteinastrology.com. It originates from Sanskrit manuscripts attributed to legendary sages like Parashara and Jaimini, who are credited with laying its foundations maralynbursteinastrology.com. In Vedic lore, these “seers” received astrological knowledge in divine trances, producing authoritative texts such as Parashara’s Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra maralynbursteinastrology.com. Burstein notes that Parashara’s work details how to construct many kinds of charts and refined techniques, including the division of the sky into 27 lunar mansions called nakshatras and the creation of specialized harmonic (divisional) charts for different life areas maralynbursteinastrology.com. For example, the Navamsha (9th-harmonic chart) is derived from the birth chart (Rasi chart) to focus on marriage prospects – showing whether an individual is likely to “marry well or not” based on planetary positions in that ninth-division chart maralynbursteinastrology.com. Vedic astrology also analyzes powerful planetary combinations called yogas, and employs symbolic planetary significators known as karakas (from Jaimini’s system) as shortcuts to represent life themes maralynbursteinastrology.com. For instance, the planet with the highest degree in the birth chart becomes the Atmakaraka, the “soul indicator,” which reveals core identity themes; if Venus is the Atmakaraka and is strong in relevant divisional charts, it suggests a positive, loving marital life with a beautiful partner maralynbursteinastrology.com.

One fundamental difference in Vedic practice is its use of the sidereal zodiac (aligned to fixed stars), unlike the tropical zodiac of Western astrology maralynbursteinastrology.com. This means planetary positions in a Vedic chart often differ by several degrees (about 24° in the 2020s) from a Western chart of the same date, due to precession of the equinoxes. Vedic astrologers place great emphasis on planetary periods (daśās) and transits for prediction, and on the holistic assessment of character and destiny through multiple chart layers.

Maralyn Burstein leverages Vedic astrology especially for deep character analysis and evaluating the soundness of a potential marriage or business partner maralynbursteinastrology.com. She asserts that Jyotish excels at revealing the strengths and weaknesses of an individual’s character “like no other astrology,” providing a rich, nuanced personality profile – so much so that she regards modern Western astrology’s ability to describe character as “a pale reflection” by comparison maralynbursteinastrology.com. Because of this depth, she even cautions that astrologers who rely solely on Western charts to give marriage advice are not truly equipped to judge character compatibility maralynbursteinastrology.com. In practice, Burstein includes Vedic charts in her consultations to detail a client’s innate qualities, spiritual inclinations, and relational karma. The myriad of divisional charts in Jyotish allows her to zoom in on specific areas (career, marriage, children, etc.) with great precision maralynbursteinastrology.com. Vedic astrology’s comprehensive “novel” of one’s life story (as she metaphorically puts it) provides a foundational character portrait in her multi-system approach maralynbursteinastrology.com. When used alongside the other traditions, Vedic astrology offers a close focus on inner traits and destiny, helping ensure that Burstein selects the “right tool for the right job” for each client’s questions maralynbursteinastrology.com.

Hellenistic Astrology

Hellenistic astrology is the tradition of the Greco-Roman world (circa 1st century BCE to a few centuries CE), with roots in the cosmopolitan mix of Greek, Egyptian, and Babylonian knowledge. Burstein describes it as the astrology of classical Greece (likely imported from Egypt) that uses the tropical zodiac (the Sun-sign framework based on the seasons) maralynbursteinastrology.com. This system fell out of common use for many centuries but has been reconstructed in modern times from ancient texts. Maralyn Burstein has diligently taught herself Hellenistic astrology by studying translations of original manuscripts—she “spent many years” on the 2nd-century compendium by Vettius Valens and applies Valens’ techniques to many subjects maralynbursteinastrology.com. In fact, she bases her work in this genre primarily on Valens’ Anthology and also incorporates insights from other Greek and later Arabic astrologers of that era maralynbursteinastrology.com maralynbursteinastrology.com. (Her toolkit of sources includes classical authors like Paul of Alexandria, Dorotheus of Sidon, Firmicus Maternus, and Rhetorius among others maralynbursteinastrology.com.)

Hellenistic astrology is as technically sophisticated as Vedic astrology, according to Burstein, and she finds it highly useful for character analysis and many types of prediction maralynbursteinastrology.com. What sets it apart are its distinctive methodologies – she notes that its “ways of judging a chart are wholly different” from those of other astrologies maralynbursteinastrology.com. Early Greek astrologers introduced a variety of special chart factors and predictive tools that make their approach quite unique. For example, Hellenistic practice emphasizes the concept of planetary sect: the chart is assessed differently depending on whether the birth was in daytime or at night. Certain planets are considered the “sect leaders” in a chart – Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn in a day birth, versus Moon, Venus, and Mars in a night birth – and their condition reveals major life themes like fame or fortune maralynbursteinastrology.com. (Burstein cites this sect-based technique as one way Hellenistic astrologers judge the “status of a life”, e.g. assessing prominence by evaluating the strength of those key planets for day or night births maralynbursteinastrology.com.) Hellenistic astrology also introduced the use of calculated points called lots (later known as Arabic Parts) to represent abstract topics like Fortune or Spirit in the chart library.keplercollege.org library.keplercollege.org. Additionally, it employs time-lord systems – e.g. annual profections or other chronological techniques – that activate certain planets or signs at specific ages to predict life periods library.keplercollege.org library.keplercollege.org. These methods, along with the use of whole-sign houses and sign-based aspects, give Hellenistic astrologers a very different “lens” on a natal chart compared to modern astrology library.keplercollege.orglibrary.keplercollege.org.

Practically, Maralyn Burstein uses Hellenistic charts to glean insights into a client’s character (much like Vedic does) and to apply classic predictive techniques that can time events or developments in life. She praises the exacting nature of Hellenistic chart reading – calling its information “exact” and a “big deal” in how it adds details unavailable elsewhere maralynbursteinastrology.com. By examining a client’s horoscope through this ancient Greek perspective, she can identify personality indicators and future trends that might not be apparent in a modern chart. For instance, a Hellenistic analysis might highlight the significance of the Part of Fortune or an auspicious planetary configuration that signals a lucky period, complementing what Vedic and Western charts show. Burstein thus treats Hellenistic astrology as an equal partner to Vedic astrology in terms of depth. It bolsters her readings with a second, independent traditional view of the client’s destiny – one grounded in the meticulously preserved doctrines of antiquity. In her own words, this resurrected classical system “offers exact information” through its unique chart interpretation methods maralynbursteinastrology.com, making it an indispensable part of her four-fold astrological model.

Western Astrology (Modern Tropical)

Western astrology, in Burstein’s usage, refers to the modern tropical zodiac astrology that is most familiar in Europe and the Americas. This is essentially the legacy of Medieval and Renaissance astrological practice as further modified by 20th-century psychological and pop astrology. Burstein is frank in characterizing modern Western astrology as a “pale reflection” of the more ancient systems maralynbursteinastrology.com. She explains that over the centuries, Western astrology became like a game of “telephone” – passed down and altered by many hands, losing some of its original depth and logic maralynbursteinastrology.com. The result, she says, is that today’s mainstream astrology can only sketch personality in broad strokes, “like a cartoon rendition” of a person’s character, especially when compared to the “superlative depth” provided by Hellenistic or Vedic techniques maralynbursteinastrology.com.

Despite these critiques, Western astrology remains an important part of Burstein’s toolset for certain purposes. It is set in the tropical zodiac (tied to the equinoxes and seasons) maralynbursteinastrology.com and includes astronomical factors not used in older systems (for example, the modern use of outer planets Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, which Vedic/Hellenistic traditions historically did not consider). Maralyn notes that Western astrology “serves a useful purpose” in analyzing the temperament of the body and for prediction of events maralynbursteinastrology.com maralynbursteinastrology.com. In other words, she finds that a Western natal chart is excellent for describing how a person operates on a day-to-day, physical and behavioral level – Are they energetic or sluggish? Impulsive or cautious? Prone to stress or easy-going? – essentially the ingrained personality tempo and habits. maralynbursteinastrology.com For example, if a client is constantly facing obstacles, a Western chart might reveal an overly Mars-driven approach (too aggressive) or a heavy Saturn influence (too slow or fearful), and Burstein can then counsel the person to adjust their pace or strategy accordingly maralynbursteinastrology.com. This kind of practical advice on modus operandi is a specialty of Western astrology in her view.

Western astrology is also her go-to system for timing and prediction in many cases. She even states that Western methods can be “better at” certain kinds of prediction than Vedic astrology maralynbursteinastrology.com. Western astrologers commonly use transits (current planetary movements hitting one’s birth chart) and progressions (symbolic internal cycles) to forecast trends, and Burstein leverages these to pinpoint windows of opportunity or caution for her clients. For instance, she might examine when Saturn will transit a client’s career sector for career consolidation, or use a progressed Moon phase to discuss emotional development. Notably, Maralyn’s background includes formal study with British astrologers – she adopted the British notation style for chart-making (how the chart is drawn and the symbols used) from her training in England maralynbursteinastrology.com. She mentions that she primarily uses her own research and experience (35+ years’ worth) to interpret Western charts, and this branch often comes into play for her business clients and practical questions maralynbursteinastrology.com. In essence, Western astrology contributes the pragmatic, here-and-now perspective in Burstein’s multi-system approach. It might not dive as deeply into the soul’s karma or fate (as Vedic/Hellenistic do), but it excels at describing one’s current life dynamics and future probabilities in a concrete way. Burstein integrates Western charts to round out her readings with this more immediate, action-oriented insight, all while keeping it in context as just one piece of the larger puzzle maralynbursteinastrology.com.

British Horary Astrology

The fourth system in Burstein’s toolkit is British Horary astrology, a very different type of practice from the natal-focused systems above. Horary astrology is a divinatory branch that answers specific questions by casting a chart for the moment a query is posed. Burstein’s horary approach follows the classic method of 17th-century English astrologer William Lilly, who literally “wrote the book” on horary in the 1600s maralynbursteinastrology.com. In a horary reading, instead of using a person’s birth time, the astrologer erects a chart for the time and place when the question is asked (often using the astrologer’s location if the question is received remotely) maralynbursteinastrology.com. The resulting chart is then interpreted using fixed rules to find the answer – identifying, for example, the planet that signifies the querent (the person asking) and the planet representing the matter inquired about, and seeing how they interact.

Burstein emphasizes that she adheres strictly to William Lilly’s rules for judging horary charts, because Lilly was a master of the art and his methods have proven reliable over time maralynbursteinastrology.com. Lilly’s system uses the tropical zodiac and traditional aspects, similar to other Western astrology of his era. Interestingly, Maralyn notes that horary-type questions are found in other cultures too: in India, “Prashna” charts serve the same purpose of answering a momentary question, although Indian astrologers cast them using the sidereal zodiac and incorporate what they call “Tajika” aspects (essentially, Western aspects like conjunctions, squares, etc., introduced to India likely via Persian/Arabic influence) maralynbursteinastrology.com. By contrast, the British horary tradition Burstein uses sticks to the techniques in Lilly’s text Christian Astrology, which include strict orbs for aspects, considerations before judgment (ensuring the chart is radical), etc., all in the tropical zodiac framework maralynbursteinastrology.com.

Burstein uses horary astrology selectively and with discretion maralynbursteinastrology.com. Not every consultation will involve a horary chart – she decides on a case-by-case basis if the client’s situation warrants it. For example, if someone has a burning yes-or-no question (“Will I get the job I interviewed for?” or “Where is my lost pet?”), a horary chart can provide an immediate, focused answer that a natal chart might not clearly give. In her About page, Maralyn mentions that horary charts “are not always appropriate,” which is why she may choose not to read one for every client maralynbursteinastrology.com. But when she does employ horary, the power of this method can be remarkable. To illustrate, she recounts one of William Lilly’s famous cases: Lilly once cast a horary to help locate a thief who stole a fish, and the chart led him to the thief’s house where he indeed found the fish (half-eaten) and reclaimed it maralynbursteinastrology.com! This anecdote shows the practical, even down-to-earth uses of horary astrology in solving real-life problems maralynbursteinastrology.com. Whether it’s finding missing objects, answering questions about relationships (“Will my ex return?”), or timing an outcome, horary provides a quick, on-the-spot analytical tool. Burstein, armed with Lilly’s tried-and-true rules, can deploy this system during a session if a specific question arises that is best addressed by an instantaneous chart of the question rather than the birth chart. It’s essentially astrology’s version of Q&A, and in Maralyn’s integrated practice it serves as a complementary tool that she can pull out when needed to get clear answers for her clients.

Integrating Multiple Astrological Traditions

While each of the above systems can stand on its own, Maralyn Burstein’s signature approach is to combine them to get a fuller, corroborated picture of a person’s life. She treats astrology as a vast field where “each astrology offers its own close focus and its own distortion,” meaning each tradition sees some truths very clearly while perhaps overlooking others maralynbursteinastrology.com. By reading a chart through multiple lenses, the strengths of one system can compensate for the blind spots of another. Burstein likens Western astrology alone to a one-dimensional sketch, whereas adding Vedic and Hellenistic fleshes it out into a rich portrait maralynbursteinastrology.com. In practice, she will calculate several charts for every client – often at least five different charts for a standard reading maralynbursteinastrology.com. For example, a comprehensive session might include two Vedic charts (perhaps the main birth Rāshi chart and a key divisional chart like the Navamsha), two predictive charts (such as a Western transit chart and a progression or annual solar return), and one Hellenistic chart in the ancient style maralynbursteinastrology.com. If relevant, she might add a horary chart or other specialty charts as needed for the client’s questions maralynbursteinastrology.com. Preparing all these takes significant effort – she spends many hours before the appointment analyzing each chart – which is why clients are encouraged to book well in advance maralynbursteinastrology.com.

During the reading, Burstein synthesizes the information. For instance, to describe “what makes a person tick,” she can present the Vedic view of the character, the Hellenistic view of character and fate, and the Western view of psychological temperament, all reinforcing each other maralynbursteinastrology.com maralynbursteinastrology.com. She will literally place multiple chart print-outs in front of the client and explain how, say, the Vedic chart might reveal a leadership inclination, the Hellenistic chart’s timing techniques show a career peak in the coming year, and the Western transit chart pinpoints the very month an opportunity is likely to manifest. Clients often sit “astonished” as she gives exact details without prior knowledge of their lives, thanks to this cross-validation between systems maralynbursteinastrology.com. In a Cold Reading scenario (where the client provides only birth data and no background information), Maralyn’s multi-system approach shines: she can independently derive facts like the person’s relationship history, family dynamics, talents, and challenges purely from the charts maralynbursteinastrology.com maralynbursteinastrology.com. If all four systems indicate a particular trait or event, the likelihood and clarity of that insight are much stronger – this is the power of integration.

At the same time, Burstein has deep respect for studying each tradition separately and rigorously on its own terms. She argues that “each type of traditional astrology offers an idiosyncratic gift and should be studied alone and in tandem” with the others maralynbursteinastrology.com. In other words, to effectively combine them, one must first understand them in isolation – mastering their theory and techniques as authentically as possible. Maralyn’s own background reflects this: she invested years learning Vedic astrology from Indian masters, and similarly devoted years to Hellenistic sources (through programs like Project Hindsight and academic translations) to grasp that system’s distinct logic maralynbursteinastrology.com. By fully immersing in each (Vedic’s spiritual and deterministic worldview, Hellenistic’s philosophical and fate-oriented approach, Western’s modern psychological angle, etc.), she can then bring them together without diluting what makes each special. The result is a comprehensive, 360-degree astrological reading. Burstein’s clients receive the benefit of four different astrologies at once – much more insight than any single system could provide.

In summary, Maralyn Burstein’s four-fold approach illustrates both the diversity and complementarity of astrological systems. Vedic astrology contributes profound character and karmic analysis, Hellenistic astrology adds classical techniques for character and destiny with unique predictive timing, Western astrology offers practical insights into personality and timely event forecasting, and Horary astrology answers pressing specific questions. By using “both integration and separate” examination of these traditions (to echo the query of how to handle them), Burstein acknowledges that the systems are historically distinct yet intertwined in the ultimate quest to understand life’s patterns. Her consultations blend the theoretical richness of ancient doctrines with the practical application of modern insights, truly encompassing “both the practical and the theoretical” realms of astrology as the user wished. The guiding philosophy is clear: no one astrological system has the whole truth, but each has something true to offer – and when skillfully combined, they can provide remarkably exact and illuminating guidance for those seeking answers in the “beautiful and complex world” we live in maralynbursteinastrology.com maralynbursteinastrology.com.

Astrologers similar to Maralyn Burstein in “multi-mode” practice

What “multi-mode” means in Burstein’s context

Burstein explicitly describes using multiple systems “in tandem” (Vedic, Hellenistic, Western/tropical, and British Horary) rather than treating them as separate, competing lenses.[1] She also describes using multiple charts/techniques per client and mixing in horary selectively depending on the case/question.[2]

Practitioners who explicitly blend Eastern and Western frameworks

These are the closest “like-for-like” matches: they openly advertise using both Vedic/Jyotish and Western methods in the same consult workflow.

  • Austin Coppock — states his studies include modern, medieval, ancient, and Vedic astrology, and that he applies this mix in consultation (multi-era + cross-tradition).[3]
  • James Braha — offers “Vedic and Western” birth-chart consultations and explicitly combines Vedic timing (dashas/subperiods) with Western techniques (e.g., progressions/transits) in one reading.[4]
  • Dennis Flaherty — describes consultations using “both eastern and western astrology,” including work across tropical and sidereal frames (explicit multi-zodiac approach).[5]
  • Mariella Cassar — states she uses techniques from both Western and Vedic astrology during consultations, and links some of her technique-lineage to Hellenistic origins (cross-tradition + traditional-technique emphasis).[6]
  • Julene Louis — describes beginning in Western astrology and later studying Vedic/Jyotish (a common “two-track” training path that often shows up as blended practice).[7]
  • Ramya Krishnamurthy (NCGR leadership bio) — described as a practitioner of both Western and Indian (Vedic) astrology who combines findings from both for a “complete perspective.”[15]

Practitioners who blend multiple Western branches and timing methods

If your “multi-mode” emphasis is more about multi-branch technique (natal + predictive timing + horary/electional), these are strong parallels even when they’re not explicitly Vedic.

  • Leisa Schaim — says her consultations reflect a blend of modern Western astrology and Hellenistic techniques/perspectives (modern + traditional synthesis).[8]
  • Patrick Watson — describes electional work grounded in Hellenistic-era sources, and also offers electional timing plus horary, with a stated blend of modern and ancient techniques in client work.[9][10]
  • Orphic Astrology — explicitly positions services around multiple traditional branches (Electional, Hellenistic, and Horary) as part of the same professional offering.[11]
  • Demetra George — teaches an explicit “blend of traditional and modern astrology” (often used by practitioners as a plug-in style toolkit: traditional structure + modern interpretive framing).[12]

How to find more “multi-mode” astrologers quickly

  • Use credential directories where practitioners list specialties/approaches, then filter by keywords like “Vedic + Western,” “tropical + sidereal,” “Hellenistic + modern,” “horary + electional,” “multiple techniques,” “integrated approach.”[13][14]
  • When scanning any astrologer’s site, look for a plain-language statement that they combine systems in one consult (not just “I also know X”). Burstein’s “uses in tandem” phrasing is the gold-standard indicator.[1]
